Below is a list of books that we will commonly recommend to individuals who may be struggling with obsessive compiles related disorders (OCRDs).  Some of these books are self-help books that can provide information to parents of children with OCRDs, individuals who are currently struggling with OCRDs, or family members wanting to know more about OCRDs.

Children's Book

The book, A Thought is a Thought (...and Here's What It's Not), wrote by Panacea's owner and therapist, Chad McCoy, LPC-S, is a children book that can help explore OCD in ways that are accessible for children and parents of those new to OCD.  This book can be found on Amazon. Below is the a synopsis of the book:

"Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is a scary, frustrating, and often times chronic mental health disorder. Individuals suffering from OCD struggle with intrusive, reoccurring thoughts, impulses, urges, or images known as obsessions; and compulsive behaviors that aim to reduce their worry and uncertainty in relationship to those thoughts, impulses, urges, or images. An estimated 1 in 100 children will experience OCD and it can take up to 11-years to get a formal diagnosis! Our hope is that this book can bring some insight and clarity to those who may be suffering and offer hope knowing that they are not alone in their struggles!

This book can be a great addition to any therapy, evaluation, doctor, or mental health clinic. It provides professionals of all levels easily introduce and explain OCD to parents and their children who may be experiencing symptoms consistent with OCD."

Parenting  Book

The book Breaking Free of Child Anxiety & OCD: A Scientifically Proven Program for Parents, by Eli Lebowitz, Ph.D., explores the SPACE Program (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions) that aims at addressing parental behaviors that may be interfering, or worse, exacerbating their child's anxiety responses to challenging situations.  This book is typically utilized by parents who are working with therapists to implement the program, but it can be a stand alone resource to educated and challenge parents and their involvement in their child's anxiety and OCD rituals. Below is a synopsis of the book:

"Parenting an anxious child means facing constant challenges and questions: When should parents help children avoid anxiety-provoking situations, and when should they encourage them to face their fears? How can parents foster independence while still supporting their children? How can parents reduce the hold their child's anxiety has taken over the entire family?

Breaking Free of Child Anxiety and OCD: A Scientifically Proven Program for Parents is the first and only book to provide a completely parent-based treatment program for child and adolescent anxiety. Parents will learn how to alleviate their children's anxiety by changing the way they themselves respond to their children's symptoms--importantly, parents are not required to impose changes on their children's behavior. Instead, parents are shown how to replace their own accommodating behaviors (which allow anxiety to flourish) with supportive responses that demonstrate both acceptance of children's difficulties and confidence in their ability to cope. From understanding child anxiety and OCD, to learning how to talk with an anxious child, to avoiding common traps and pitfalls (such as being overly protective or demanding) to identifying the ways in which parents have been enabling a child's anxious behaviors, this book is full of detailed guidance and practical suggestions. Worksheets are included to help parents translate the book's suggestions into action, and the book's compassionate and personable tone will make it a welcoming resource for any concerned parent."
